Bowles – What are the best ways parents can help teachers and that teachers can help parents?

by Susan Bowles

I like the way this was phrased because I truly believe that this is a two-way street.  We are partners with parents in their child’s education, and we need to work together.  Communication is key.  Teachers and parents need to continually be in contact with each other regarding the student’s progress.  This can be through correspondence such as school folders and email, or through phone calls, texting, or in person.

I think it is important to look at this from a slightly different perspective and not make a list of things teachers can do and another list of what parents can do. Rather, through communication, parents can ask their child’s specific teacher what they can do to help their child to be successful. And equally, or perhaps even more importantly, teachers can ask parents how they can help them in their efforts to support their child’s education.

Each parent and each teacher is uniquely different.  It is important to get to know and understand each other.  Together, they can support the student and provide the optimal learning environment for success.
