  • Can Historians Help School Reformers?
Historians are divided over what can be learned from history. Some find that knowing the past can inform the present. Others say that the past has no lessons to teach those living now but it is nonetheless worthwhile to recapture what occurred and their consequences. But when policymakers, practitioners, پدر و مادر, and public school students ask about the usefulness of history they want guidance from the past to avoid making mistakes now. And some even want predictions. Historians who believe that the past can inform policy argue that even if “درس ها” cannot be extracted from the past, policymakers can surely profit from looking backward. They say scholars can aid contemporary policymakers by pointing out similarities and differences between previous and current situations. یا, of even more help to policymakers, historians can redefine existing problems and solutions by observing how similar situations were viewed by a previous generation. سرانجام, without stooping to offer “درس ها,” historians can alert policymakers to what did not work, what might be preferable and what to avoid under certain conditions. Other historians reject the notion that history can, or even should, serve the present. These historians point to their obligations as professionals to be disinterested in ... بیشتر بخوانید

  • To do or not to do transnational education?
The UK higher education sector is world class by any objective measure, but that hasn’t prevented financial sustainability becoming an issue for many providers. International student numbers are almost certain to continue falling following recent changes, compounded by the government’s negative messaging and policy intent irrespective of the MAC review outcome. Given this reality and the absence of money for any future government to invest in higher education, whatever its political inclination, universities must look to their own means to augment and diversify their revenue streams. None of the available options are quick or easy – and it will be particularly challenging for those who missed the opportunity to harvest monies in the good times and invest them into assured future success. But we must find a way to embark on the decade long transformation that UK HE requires. One essential element is transnational education – the opportunities were outlined in a recent International Higher Education Commission report – but its potential is not realised 50% of students are in only 15 موسسات. Often misplaced, concerns about quality assurance, investment costs and complex regulatory systems have prevented it from being more widely adopted; اما TNE has never really been difficult, ... بیشتر بخوانید

  • Diane Ravitch's Blog: Samuel Abrams Is Stepping Down at the National Center on the Study of Privatization in Education
وبلاگ دایان راویچ: Samuel Abrams Is Stepping Down at the National Center on the Study of Privatization in Education Educators and policymakers need unbiased analyses of the effects of privatization of education, and that is what the National Center on the Study of Privatization in Education at Teachers College, Columbia University has provided since it was founded by noted economist Henry Levin in 2000. به 2015, Levin stepped down and was succeeded by Samuel Abrams, who wrote a superb study of The Edison Project called Education and the Commercial Mindset. For the best nine years, Abrams has run NCSPE with integrity. Privatization is rapidly spreading around the globe, and the public needs a reliable source to keep watch on it. I hope that TC can find someone as able and thoughtful to succeed him. Samuel Abrams wrote this letter about his decision and the next chapter in his career: After nine years as the director of NCPSE, I’m writing to share that I’m stepping down to become the director of the International Partnership for the Study of Educational Privatization (IPSEP). IPSEP will be anchored at the National Education Policy Center (NEPC) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Partner institutions will include, to start, the ... بیشتر بخوانید

  • Calls for PSW for sub-degree programs in NZ
Sub-degree programs in New Zealand need to be able to offer post-study work rights, the peak body representing the country’s private training providers has said. The Independent Tertiary Education NZ says that degree level and above is currently able to see better growth than sub-degree level programs, with post-study work opportunities impacting studentsdecisions. “The visa settings are not favourable for sub-degree programs,” ITENZ chief executive, Wayne Dyer, told The PIE. “The post-study work rights have been more restrictive for the sub-degree programs and that has impacted quite a lot of providers – for them, that’s a critical issue. The association, which represents some 140 private training establishments in New Zealand (میان 43-50 of whom actively recruit for international students), is lobbying the government for increased work opportunities. New rules were brought in for non-degree level courses به 2022, meaning that students on courses below level 7 – unless the qualification is included in a specific skill shortage list – could no longer gain access to work in the country after finishing their studies. The decision came in after a consultation process was announced in 2018. با این حال, ITENZ is understood to be buoyed by a change in government last year, with the National party’s manifesto featuring post-study work pledges.
