Mrs. President: A Trailblazing Opera on Feminism and Defiance

Planet Classroom’s film showcases a powerful scene from Mrs. President, a bold and stirring opera composed and conducted by Victoria Bond, with a libretto by Hilary Bell. Performed by the Anchorage Opera in 2012, the production tells the story of Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for U.S. President in 1872—at a time when women couldn’t even vote.

Set against the backdrop of a patriarchal society, Woodhull’s audacious decision to campaign for the presidency becomes a symbol of resistance. This particular scene from Act I captures her unyielding spirit and the societal shockwaves her candidacy caused. The rumors, the ridicule, and the revolutionary stance all converge in a performance that electrifies both vocally and visually.

Bond’s musical composition swells with emotion and strength, complementing Bell’s poignant libretto. Together, they deliver a dramatic yet empowering message that continues to resonate in today’s ongoing fight for gender equality. Mrs. President doesn’t just portray history—it revives it with a lyrical force that lingers long after the final note.

⭐ Rating: 5 out of 5 stars – A moving tribute to one of history’s overlooked heroines.
