Rompiendo El Ciclo, directed by Aria Zapata, is a documentary that dives into the life of Luciana Pérez López, a resilient single mother in rural Guatemala. The film explores the realities of machismo and the entrenched gender norms that can limit women’s lives and opportunities. Against the odds, Luciana becomes a leader who fights for girls’ education and community development—showing how learning, dignity, and long-term change can help break cycles of inequality.
As a Hispanic woman myself, I related deeply to Luciana’s hopes for children and education, in the same way my own mother wanted the best for me. This documentary does an excellent job highlighting Luciana’s strength and love for her family, while also connecting with viewers who understand what it means to fight for a better future. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who wants insight into the obstacles women in Latin America can face in pursuing basic rights, necessities, and education.
