The Giving Tree: Gum, Culture, and Care

By Zach Cole
The Giving Tree, directed by Dominique Salalila, is a visually rich, emotionally grounded short that traces the bond between community, culture, and rainforest in Uaxactún, Guatemala. Through the perspective of the chicleros who harvest gum, the film captures a tradition rooted in sustainability and pride. Its intimate tone and attentive imagery convey the rhythm of daily work and the respect these artisans hold for their craft. While the film’s measured pace mirrors the patience the practice demands, it leaves viewers curious for more context on how this heritage endures amid modern pressures. Even so, The Giving Tree stands as a sincere reflection on preservation, identity, and resilience.
