Eastern Dawn Concert: Bard Chinese Ensemble Bridges Cultures Through Storytelling in Music

By Rhea Mursalin

The Eastern Dawn Concert, performed by the Bard Chinese Ensemble (BCE) on November 24, 2019, is a captivating celebration of traditional and contemporary Chinese music. Featuring 11 student musicians on instruments such as pipa, ruan, erhu, and guzheng, the ensemble delivers technically accomplished and emotionally resonant performances.

BCE’s ability to blend vibrant Chinese timbres with Western orchestral richness creates a unique listening experience that highlights cultural storytelling and musical innovation. While a more dynamic stage presentation could have enhanced the visual experience, the focus on the musicians allows their craft and emotional depth to shine.
