This month, audiences can watch Net Zero Speaks with Stefano Moncada on the Planet Classroom Network YouTube Channel. This series is curated by Planet Classroom in association with the Protect Our Planet (POP) Movement.
In this episode of Net Zero Speaks, host Ivan Ransom explores with climate scientist Stefano Moncada why the world’s smallest islands are among the first places to experience the impacts of climate change—and why they are also becoming global leaders in climate resilience.
Ivan’s conversation with Professor Stefano Moncada highlights how rising sea levels, stronger storms, and environmental pressures are forcing island communities to innovate faster than almost anywhere else. Moncada explains how local knowledge, nature-based solutions, and community-driven adaptation are helping protect people, ecosystems, and economies. The interview demonstrates that while small islands are highly vulnerable, they also offer valuable lessons for the rest of the world on building a more resilient and sustainable future. By translating complex climate challenges into practical solutions, Moncada shows that the innovations emerging from small islands can help communities everywhere prepare for a changing climate.
The Global Search for Education is pleased to welcome Ivan Ransom.
C. M. Rubin: Ivan, why did you choose to interview Professor Stefano Moncada?
Ivan Ransom: I first discovered Professor Moncada’s work through his publication on sustainable development pathways for small islands. I was instantly inspired by his innovative, ground-level approach to climate adaptation and knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sit down with him, delve deeper into his research, and share his insights with our global audience.
C. M. Rubin: What surprised you most about this interview?
Ivan Ransom: What stood out to me most was the sheer ingenuity of the solutions already being deployed on the ground. We often hear about small islands purely as victims of climate change, but learning how these communities actively use local ecology and nature-based designs to adapt and safeguard their livelihoods was truly eye-opening.
C. M. Rubin: What are your three key takeaways for the Net Zero Speaks audience?
Ivan Ransom:
- First, over 10% of the world’s population lives on islands—meaning island resilience isn’t a niche topic; it affects hundreds of millions of lives directly.
- Second, every successful climate adaptation initiative shares one essential element: inclusive stakeholder engagement that unites local communities, policymakers, and scientists.
- Finally, modern climate science—particularly through the IPCC—is increasingly recognizing that traditional, Indigenous, and local knowledge are indispensable tools for building effective, long-term climate resilience.
Thank you, Ivan!
