Malawi Student Talks about Developing an Understanding of Our Own Cultures and Why It Is Important.

By Justin DeCausey

“Recently I went to a wedding for a very important chief. There’s something that I realized when I went there.  I realized that I didn’t know enough about my own culture.  And that made me very upset.” – Chimwenwe

Do you know what makes you one of a kind?  Chimwenwe, a young Malawi girl, learned that lesson the hard way. Chimwenwe hooks the viewers in with a burst of energy during her presentation to a crowd of her peers. She recalls a particular day when she attended a wedding in a local village and realizes she knows little about her own culture; the people and the traditions surrounding her. Confused about the food and other things at the wedding, she needs to ask various family members to fill the gaps.

Chimwenwe’s story is important, but this short didn’t do anything to enhance Chimwenwe’s words. There were a few moments when she looked down at her card nervously where the editing should have been better.

Overall, Chimwenwe did a great job bringing her energy and an important message to our attention. However, this production could have been better.  I would rate this film 3 of 5 stars.
