The Global Search for Education: Climate Activist Kasike Kalaan Nibonrix Kaiman has 3 Key Takeaways from His Net Zero Interview with Jamaica’s UnaMay Gordon

This month audiences can watch Net Zero Speaks with UnaMay Gordon on the Planet Classroom network. This film was curated by Protect our Planet and Planet Classroom.

Can agroforestry help mitigate climate change and remove CO₂ from our air permanently? In April 2021, Jamaica targeted an ambitious 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The upgraded new goal addressed land use change, forestry emissions, and committing to deeper emission reductions in the energy sector. NET ZERO’s Climate Activist, Kasike (Chief) Kalaan Nibonrix Kaiman, interviews UnaMay Gordon, the Principal Director of Climate Change for the Jamaican Government, who has over 40 years of climate change and environmental management experience. They explore the greatest challenges Jamaica is facing and the climate change strategies that are helping Jamaica achieve the race to Net Zero.

The Global Search for Education is pleased to welcome Kasike (Chief) Kalaan Nibonrix Kaiman.

Welcome Kasike. Why did you decide to interview Principal Director UnaMay Gordon?  What inspired you about her?

I chose Principal Director UnaMay Gordon to highlight the presence of female leadership and the perspective of small island developing states in the climate change discussion. Director Gordon’s work highlighted traditional, indigenous agricultural ways and their contributions to mitigating climate change.

What surprised you most about your interview?

That the Comprehensive study of Mangroves will be added to the National Strategy.

What are your 3 main takeaways for the Net Zero audience from this interview?

My 3 main takeaways are that first, indigenous knowledge needs to play a role in policy development. Second, land is a valuable asset and we need to make the best decisions regarding land use. Finally, we as a people need to find the ecosystem balance that allows us to live in harmony with our environment.

Thank you Kasike!
