What Do You Know About Microgrids?

By Reilly Wisniewski

Our planet is at the point where the environmental destruction we have caused is irreparable. However, we have options that can help prevent further damage and begin to course correct the future of our planet. What Do You Know About Microgrids? is an original problem solvers video for the Planet Classroom Network created by Destiny Roney.  Roney focuses on the importance of clean and renewable energy, and lists the many benefits of them. For instance, microgrids can help us with green energy and store it in things such as batteries, specifically batteries like you would see in electric vehicles. This is great because hospitals, research facilities, universities, etc, would all continue to be operable in the event of a power outage. Microgrids provide their own energy apart from the main electrical grid.

One thing I think the video could do to improve its overall quality is to use imagery that better represents what a microgrid actually is. Many scenes in the video use pretty generic images of hospitals, money, smoke towers, etc. I wish I could have seen more depictions of what a microgrid looks like and how it functions. I had to look for a diagram of a microgrid operation after I finished the video, for which I found plenty of super easy to understand images and flowcharts. Although the video does a fairly quick but good explanation of what a microgrid is, I think some people might have a hard time conceptualizing what it actually looks like.

I think the added voiceover helps make the video a bit more engaging, however, the voice over isn’t a direct narration of the text that appears on screen. I think the information being provided via both voice over and on screen text could be spaced out a bit more. The video gives the viewer plenty of time to finish reading the text after the narration for the scene is completed, however, it still feels like a bit of information overload.

I would personally give this short film 3 / 5 stars.
