Film Review by Charles Cowie-Wright
Dirt Court Dreams, directed by Cassandra Heikkila and produced by Daniel Karnafel, is a short documentary set on the edge of Kibera, Nairobi. It follows Flo, a tennis coach who grew up in the community and now trains young athletes at the Sadili Oval Sports Academy. The film shows how sport can provide structure, discipline, and opportunity for kids who otherwise have limited access to resources. Cinematography by Michael Kuba and editing by Dean Jacobson keep the focus intimate and honest.
Shot up close and on the court, the film highlights the daily effort behind Flo’s work and the determination of his students. It’s a direct, grounded look at the impact of sports in a community setting.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars) — clear, focused, and feel-good.
