The Global Search for Education: Can We Save Coral Reefs by Listening?

This month, audiences can screen Net Zero Speaks with Ben Williams on the Planet Classroom Network. This film is curated by the Protect Our Planet Movement and Planet Classroom.

In this youth-driven Net Zero Speaks episode, marine biologist Ben Williams (University College London & the Zoological Society of London) reveals how AI + bioacoustics can “listen to the reef” to detect hidden signs of recovery. Drawing on 900,000+ underwater sound detections from reefs across Australia, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, and the Maldives, Williams explains why crackling shrimp and fish calls can show restoration working—even where visuals fall short. Hosted by Sahil Soni of the POP Movement (India), the conversation explores 15 reef “sonotypes,” fish recruitment surges (500%+ in some cases), and the essential human judgment behind the algorithms.  This episode is edited by Collin Taylor.

The Global Search for Education is pleased to welcome Sahil Soni.

Sahil, why did you decide to interview Ben Williams?

I wanted to interview Ben because his work really inspired me. Coral reefs are in so much danger right now, but what he’s doing with AI and bioacoustics gives a completely new perspective — it’s like giving the ocean a voice. I felt this was a story young people like me should hear, because it shows how science and innovation can create hope. For me, it was about learning and also sharing that hope with others.

What surprised you most about your interview?

The biggest surprise for me was realizing how much reefs are already telling us through sound. The idea that the crackle of shrimp or fish calls could reveal whether a reef is alive or recovering just blew my mind. Hearing that restored reefs showed fish recruitment going up by more than 500% made me feel hopeful — like nature is ready to bounce back if we just give it a chance. I was also struck by how Ben said AI alone isn’t enough — it still takes human curiosity and care to make sense of what the ocean is saying.

What are the three main takeaways for the Net Zero audience from your interview with Ben Williams?

First, the ocean is speaking — we just need to learn how to listen.
Second, restoration actually works; life can return if we act fast and smart.
Third, young people have a real role to play. We can carry these messages forward, spread hope, and take action in our own communities.
