Bane of the Beasts by Alexis Wong is an animated short film with a dreamy, storybook-like aesthetic that immediately draws the viewer into the story. The captivating narration and soothing soundscape brings back memories of childhood stories and lessons that last a lifetime. The film further cements this with a simple, yet powerful message regarding the risk of rejection through the eyes of the protagonist, a creature constantly met with disapproval by the other herds in the land. The film’s bold but grounded end sets a reminder that perfect happy endings are not the only way to end a story with a strong message; the film’s epilogue gives us a glimmer of hope as we witness the greater destiny that was meant for the creature. Wong’s willingness to write a conclusion that does not magically resolve everything, but instead shows the harsher side of discrimination is a decision I felt produced a vastly more memorable and impactful story with a bittersweet outcome. The film is visually creative and fascinating. While the animation could be improved and more consistent, the colorful, unique, and vibrant style more than makes up for this. Overall, an enchanting and touching animated short film.
